Google’s Material You is a new design feature launched on Android phones with Android 12. It’s not a huge change, but it gives your phone a subtle and aesthetically pleasing update.
However, Chromebooks — and Chromeboxes — have yet to get a Google design edge despite running on Google’s ChromeOS. But with the latest version of ChromeOS, you can fix that yourself.
Now, if you have ChromeOS 114, you can play stuff that uses Chrome flags and see what you’ve been missing. The fact that you can use these flags to access the new look isn’t the official launch of Material You on ChromeOS, but it will give you the option to try out the popular feature a little earlier.
Again, as in Android phones, it won’t drastically transform your Chromebook by any means, but your Chromebook will now look a lot nicer while you’re using it.
Here’s how to get ChromeOS Material You before it launches.
How to get ChromeOS Material You
- Open Chrome flags
- Enable all jelly tags
- Enable quick settings refresh flag
- Restart your ChromeOS device
Read on for detailed instructions for each step.
1. Open Chrome flags
The first thing you need to do is open Chrome flags. These flags allow you to activate the Chrome browser or ChromeOS features that are not available by default.
To open Chrome flags, Click the launcher icon on your desktop. You can also hit the player button on your Chromebook if applicable. then, Find chrome://flags And Press or click Enter. This will open the Chrome flags window. You can also do this in a Chrome browser tab.
2. Enable all jelly flags
Once the Chrome flags window opens, Click on the search bar at the top. then, Type Jelly in the search bar. This will give you a list of jelly flags.
Why Jelly? Because in ChromeOS 114, that’s the watchword for Material You features. Go through all of Jelly’s flags Enable all jelly flags.
Once the first Jelly tick is enabled, a box will appear at the bottom of the window asking you to restart your device. ignore it now.
3. Enable the Quick Settings Refresh flag
Once you click reset, the settings reset menu will be pulled up automatically. In that menu, there will be an option called Powerwash, with a clickable button that says Reset. Click the reset buttonthen Click Restart In the pop-up asking if you want to reset your device using Powerwash.
4. Restart your ChromeOS device
Remember the box asking you to restart your device? Now it is important. For those textures that you have changed to apply, you need to restart your device. Click Restart in the lower right corner From the Chrome flags window.
Once your device resets – and it only takes a second – you’re all set. To see the changes, open the quick settings in the lower right corner of your desktop. This is the axis that shows brightness, volume, etc. You’ll notice that the scroll bars are wider and match the color tones of the wallpaper. Ditto for the Wi-Fi icon in the quick settings bar when the quick settings drawer is minimized.
Again, the changes won’t be major, but it will look nice. For more ChromeOS tips and tricks, see our guide on ChromeOS How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook.
