How an 11-year-old Iowa fan managed to meet her co-star, Michael McDonald

Des Moines, Iowa While most teens in America might idolize the likes of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, or Harry Styles, 11-year-old Paisley Gardner from Des Moines has a different fetish, a boy she keeps hearing on the radio.

“He looks like an angel, in a way,” Gardner told CBS News.

Parents Tony and Jessica said they didn’t know what to think, when a few months ago their daughter became obsessed with that smooth, buttery voice of ’70s soft rock legend Michael McDonald.

They said Paisley is smitten.

Jessica Gardner said: “One day, I Googled a picture of Michael McDonald, came up the stairs and flung herself on the bed and said, ‘Aww! “

Turns out, her pop star was 71 years old.

“I just had to deal with it, but it’s okay,” Paisley said.

So last month, Toni got tickets to see McDonald’s in Des Moines for $7 a piece and then surprised Paisley with the concert of her life. McDonald on tour with Dobby Brothers.

“I almost screamed,” Paisley said when she found out.

Paisley says she was the youngest fan in the audience of a generation, and the only one who actually talked to McDonald, sort of.

“Michael, you are my favorite,” Paisley exclaimed during the show, and she got a response.

“He said thank me!”

But it wasn’t enough. After the show, Paisley spoke to CBS News about how great it was to have a real conversation with McDonald’s.

And to her surprise, she suddenly got that opportunity on Zoom.

“How are you darling?” a shocked MacDonald-Paisley asked, and began to cry, but then recovered to have a nice chat.

“Is your best friend Christopher Cross?” Paisley MacDonald asked.

“Well, he’s one of my best friends,” MacDonald told her.

Then MacDonald gave her a nicer invitation.

“Maybe we’ll watch the show behind the scenes, how’s that?” McDonald asked.

A sweet gift for a girl who knows there’s more to appreciating music than hair color.
