Spirit Box review: Courtney LaPlante has arrived | music | entertainment

This was most evident during tracks like Circle With Me and Holy Roller (of course) where her vocals rivaled (and even surpassed) those of some of the biggest and best singers on the scene. And she made it look effortless, with a stunning technique that has proven her worth on any stage she’s out on.

Courtney proved this tenfold during Yellow Jacket, which included a surprise appearance from Sam Carter of The Architects.

Sam needs no introduction, and the audience reaction showed how much he loved the scene – but his arrival was more of a bonus than a feature of the evening. Some guest appearances at live shows could trump the intimacy and special relationship the band has with its audience, but Sam delivered a loyalty, delivering amazing performance and quit. He knew that the Spirit Box was the attraction tonight, and he respected it. Fair play, Sam.

Can you blame him, though? It was hard to argue with Spirit Box’s all-night prowess. Band members Mike Stringer, Ziff Rose, and Josh Gilbert were at the top. Geniuses at work create amazing soundscapes with their few tools.

Weirdly, aside from a massive Spiritbox performance at the Roundhouse, this was the one thing I wanted more from the band: more depth.

With a single guitar, bass, and drum kit, Spiritbox felt strangely stripped-down during their quieter moments. That’s not to say that they sounded bad in any way – quite the opposite – but their massive repertoire didn’t quite pack as much punch as they always do on record.
