Star talks about giving up ‘EZ’ after 5 seasons playing ‘Mayans MC’ on FX

New York — First, there was Sons of Anarchy, a hit show about the California Motorcycle Club.

Then came the now-titled Mayans MC, and after five seasons, the Wednesday night spin-off ends with a two-hour finale on FX.

Mayans MC follows the life of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, the head of an outlaw biker gang that operates on the California-Mexico border. They are rivals of the Sons of Anarchy, but hardly united. In fact, the tension between EZ and his brother was at the center of the final episode.

Members of the “Mayans” motorcycle club are taking their last ride, and for a guy who’s played “EZ” for so long, it’s a bittersweet moment.

“Spending so much time with the character and getting to know that character, it becomes a part of you. So, it’s hard to let go,” said JD Pardo, “EZ” on “Mayans MC.”

Cruel, because the club leader is an angry man.

“I didn’t realize what kind of toll it takes on you: physically and mentally to be in a certain place for five years,” he said. “I have to go through some sort of purging process to get the EZ properties out of my head because I’ve been in them for so long.”

The intense finale isn’t made any easier by what the man in charge calls “a nuclear wasteland with emotional consequences.”

Pardo said, “It’s like death, isn’t it? You’re killing a part of yourself: to let it go and let it go.”

In an interview recorded before the current cast’s strike, Pardo told me that the good chemistry between the two actors is one of the reasons the show is still going.

The beautiful writing is another, “FX is a place for artists we have a huge fan base with the song Sons of Anarchy.”

His goal was to build on that base.

“I always felt like we were getting the baton, and I just want to take it and add to it,” Pardew said. “I didn’t want to be a karaoke version of ‘Sons’. I didn’t want to be a non-capitalized Latin version of ‘Sons.’ I wanted it to be our own show.”

mission accomplished! This is that rare show that is just as good as the original series. It is intended for adults, often violent, but very convincing. The two-hour finale airs Wednesday night on FX and then streams beginning Thursday on Hulu. Both are owned by the parent company of ABC 7.
