Outfest Los Angeles unveils the jury prize winners

Los Angeles — Outfest 41 wrapped up in LA on Sunday, but not before the big winners for this year’s festival were announced. Spread out over 11 days, Outfest is filled with screenings, red carpets, panel discussions and workshops, all aimed at celebrating queer cinema. The LGBTQIA+ Film Festival hopes to empower storytellers, artists and filmmakers, who are often underrepresented in the entertainment industry.

And there is nothing more powerful than rewarding exceptional work, which is exactly what the Film Festival does when it hands out the prestigious Grand Jury Awards. This year’s winners are a diverse group of creatives who have proven themselves to be courageous, provocative and thoughtful in their filmmaking.

The Paul D Lerner and Stephen Reese Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature went to Theo Montoya’s Anhell69. This award comes with a cash prize of $5,000.

Other Grand Jury Prize winners include “Something You Said Last Night” by Louis D. Phillips, “The Fabulous Ones” by Roberta Torre, “The Avocado Hole” by Ari Zara, “Love, Jimmy” by Carla Murthy and “Stretching for Maximum Results” by Nyala Moon.

“Chasing Amy” directed by Sav Rodgers earned the coveted spot for the film chosen to be shown at the close of the night, which he says: “It’s the honor of a lifetime. I love these programmers and their view of gay cinema.”

The award winners will be available to view on the Outfest Los Angeles virtual platform through July 30th.
