The new trailer for HBO Max “Coming Soon” highlights the list of upcoming TV shows for the streaming service for the remainder of 2022 and beyond. And streaming rival Netflix should worry about the quality offered.
The trailer begins with a preview of several shows still slated to hit HBO Max in the last few months of 2022, including season three We Here and a new four-part documentary focusing on basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal, named on Appropriately Shaq.
There’s also a fresh look at Season 2 of The White Lotus which is set to premiere on October 30. The comedy-drama anthology series was a hit for HBO Max in 2021 and its first season earned 10 Emmy Awards. Its sophomore season is likely to generate a lot of interest when it premieres in just a couple of weeks.
The preview also looks to HBO Max’s lineup of upcoming 2023 TV shows. First, another sneak peek at The Last of Us, the hotly anticipated adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game. There’s no new footage shown here, but we actually got our first trailer last month which has been well received by gamers in general.
Here are quick previews of The White House Plumbers, a new mini-series with an impressive roster of cast. The political-themed show stars Justin Theroux, Lena Headey, Woody Harrelson, and Domhnall Gleeson. Next up is a glimpse into The Idol, a sparkling drama starring Lily-Rose Depp and created by Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd.
The trailer also shines through with footage from Somebody, Somewhere season 2 and Barry season 4, as well as other returning favorites like Good Gems, Last Week Tonight, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Real Time with Bill Maher, A Black Lady Sketch Show and The age denomination.
The trailer was created for a short, but cool, sneak peek into Season 4. Logan Roy’s speech from Brian Cox declaring “We’re killing dissent” and “I love it here. Me and **King love it here.” There’s no firm release date for Succession Season 4 yet, but it’s possible that many HBO Max subscribers are eagerly awaiting the show’s return.
The back half of the trailer features a few new series set to hit HBO Max in 2023 including Love & Death, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Kristen Ritter and Jesse Plemons. There’s also Full Circle and The Climb. In addition, there are brief glimpses of more returning shows such as Our Flag Means Death, Julia and Titans, Doom Patrol, Gossip Girl, The Sex Life of College Girls, Hacks, and Tokyo Vice. That’s a massive amount of TV to look forward to in 2023.
Netflix should take notes from HBO Max
The inclusion of Logan Roy’s speech focused on squashing an opponent and building something “better, faster, leaner, brutish” seems very intentional — almost certainly a tongue-in-cheek warning to HBO Max streaming rivals like Netflix.
While the merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus earlier this year cast some doubt on the future of the HBO streaming service, this trailer sends a very clear message that the platform is still alive and kicking. And what an upcoming lineup she’ll be able to brag about, too.
While Netflix is feeling the heat for its perpetual habit of canceling shows after just one season and taking its first step into the world of ad-supported streaming, HBO Max’s schedule is packed with must-watch TV, including new shows and returning favorites.
There is no denying that when it comes to the sheer amount of content, Netflix is the king of streaming. However, HBO Max has always taken a quality first approach, which is why we rate it as the best streaming service available today. This preview view is further evidence that when it comes to directing critically acclaimed songs, HBO Max is pretty much unparalleled.
There’s no doubt that Netflix and other streaming platforms like Prime Video and Disney Plus will have useful content to offer in the coming months, but as this trailer shows, beating HBO Max will be tough. We can’t see the streaming device being dislodged anytime soon, and this trailer is all the clues needed as to why.
