Apple sold 7 of the 10 best-selling smartphones of 2021: Counterpoint

Smartphones from Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi have made it to the list of the 10 best global smartphones for 2021, according to new research by Counterpoint. Apple’s iPhone models scored seven points on the list, the highest score ever. While Xiaomi took two points and Samsung one.

The first five models were in 2021 from Apple. iPhone 12 was the best-selling model, followed by iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 11. These top three models contributed 41% of Apple’s total sales. The research indicates that pending demand for 5G upgrades by a strong and loyal iOS user base and a push from carriers has led to iPhone 12 series volumes.

“Besides, the late release of the iPhone 12 series shifted some holiday season demand to the early months of 2021. The latest iPhone 13 series performs well with iPhone 13 becoming the best-selling model in the fourth quarter of 2021, followed by iPhone 13 “Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro,” Counterpoint said in its research.

According to Counterpoint, there were more than 4,200 active smartphone models in the global market, and the top 10 selling smartphone models contributed 19% of total global smartphone unit sales in 2021, compared to 16% in 2020.

Samsung Galaxy A12 ranked sixth in 2021. Almost all regions and countries showed strong demand for A12 throughout the year. North America, Latin America and Western Europe ranked first in their markets.

“Samsung’s choice of A12 features such as a good camera setup, large battery size, six memory configurations and longer software support have made this model a good value-for-money product that has been a huge hit with customers. We believe the momentum will continue through the successor to the A12 launched in December 2021, Galaxy A13 (5G), the company added.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 entered the list in 2021, contributing 22 percent to the brand’s total sales. Xiaomi has done well across regions. China, India, and the Asia Pacific region ranked first in their markets. Xiaomi pushed its budget models like the Redmi 9A and 9 into these price-conscious areas, as it faced a shortage of components for its entry-level series.
