Apple Watch Series 3 production could be halted this year, says report

The Apple Watch Series 3 could be discontinued in the third quarter of 2022, more than five years after its initial launch, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst claims that the computing power of the device cannot meet the requirements of newer versions of WatchOS.

The Apple Watch Series 3 comes with the S3 chipset and is currently the oldest smartwatch in Apple’s wallet to support WatchOS 8. Aside from the older internals, the watch also features large bezels around its display: it’s the last of its kind to do so.

In 2020, many users encountered issues after updating the watch to WatchOS 7, with thousands of people complaining on Apple forums about randomly restarting and freezing the device. Other issues also included the inability of the watch to unlock Macbooks, battery drain, increased load times for apps, and decreased functionality.

According to Bloomberg, rumors state that the Apple Watch 8 will be released alongside a new rugged model and an updated lower-cost Apple Watch SE. While not much is known about the upcoming series, Juli Clover of Macrumors suggests that the Series 8 will look exactly like the Series 7, although Apple has been working on an updated design with flat edges for the latest iPhone and iPad Pro flagships.

Some of the rumored new features of the Series 8 watches include user body temperature sensors, sleep apnea detection, and car accident detection.

Apple has also patented and applied for patents on several watch technologies including leather-based biometric authentication that would allow users to authenticate devices just by wearing them and a self-tightening watch strap that would automatically adjust itself during periods of intense activities such as Running or playing sports.
