The parents of a severely malnourished 8-year-old who died last year in a New York hospital have been charged with the murder, police said.
Michael Ransom, 33, and Shari Barney, 29, were arrested Monday on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, manslaughter of a person under the age of 11 and premeditated murder, according to the New York City Police Department. The couple are from the Bronx.
Police said Barney brought her son to the emergency room on June 1, 2021. He was “unconscious, unresponsive and did not notice any visible signs of shock.”
Baby Joseph Barney was pronounced dead in hospital.
the police said NBC New York That the boy weighed only 30 pounds at the time of his death, when the normal weight for a boy at this age ranged from 46 to 78 pounds.
Police also said the boy had “numerous indications” of child abuse.
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is expected to release more information on the case.
