One Piece is getting an RPG adaptation, coming in 2022

Fan favorite anime, One Piece is getting this year’s role-playing game, featuring original art from manga writer Eiichiro Oda. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic Straw Hat characters, and they launch on current and legacy consoles, along with Windows PCs via Steam later this year.

The announcement came as part of a “One Piece” news update, in which Bandai Namco was confirmed to take over publishing duties in the West. The small gameplay footage shown doesn’t delve into the mechanics, but it does seem to feature classic RPGs like exploration, puzzles, treasure hunting (as do pirates), vine climbing, and some turn-based battles similar to Final Fantasy titles.

Eiichiro Oda’s involvement here is simply limited to character design and the creation of exotic monsters that roam the many islands we advance to. As for the story, the developer ILCA Inc has kept most of it under wraps, although it promises a completely original plot line, unlike most anime games that force you to play the same scenes from the show in CGI format. The studio has also worked on remakes of Pokémon ‘Brilliant Diamond’ and ‘Shining Pearl’.

According to the official description, players will take control of protagonist Monkey D Luffy, leading their group of “straw hats” on high-octane journeys and battles. Swallowed by a severe storm into the sea, the pirates are dropped on a mysterious island, all separated from the rest. Players must take control of familiar characters from the show and embark on an amazing journey, battling powerful enemies, confronting strange local islanders, and researching secrets.

The confirmed cast, for now, includes Luffy, Sanji, Nami, Usopp, Robin, Chopper, Frankie, Brock, and everyone’s favorite Triple Blade player, Zorro. “I said to myself – Wasn’t it like 3 years ago when I designed the characters?! Ha ha ha! But when I actually saw the game… Wow! I felt like I was watching a movie!!! Ichiro Oda said, referring to the game “What a Amazing immersion.”

In addition, One Piece is also getting a live adaptation on Netflix, in which most of the cast has been announced. During the live broadcast, the team confirmed that “Yellowjackets” star Peter Gadiot will play the legendary red-haired pirate, Shanks. More details will be revealed soon.
