At least five gunmen opened fire in a deadly shooting in Sacramento, police said

At least five people opened fire during a weekend mass shooting in Sacramento sparked by gang violence that left six people dead, police said Wednesday.

At least 12 people were injured in the barrage of gunfire early Sunday in the bustling downtown area. Sacramento police said the shooting took place between at least two groups of men. Authorities said it was “increasingly clear” that gang violence was at the center of the shootings but did not elaborate.

“This downtown tragedy is a very general example of what families in many of our neighborhoods know so well,” Sacramento Police Chief Cathy Lister said: in the current situation. “The suffering caused by gang violence is not limited to gang members. It extends to claim and destroy innocent lives and harm our entire community.”

At least three people have been arrested so far in connection with the shooting. Police said Davion Dawson, 31, was arrested late Monday for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Dawson has not been charged with crimes directly related to the shooting.

Authorities earlier arrested Dandrey Martin, 26, and his brother, Smiley Martin, 27. Police said the younger Martin faces charges of assault with a firearm and of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. His brother is expected to face charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun.

Police said the number of those who opened fire was likely to increase as the investigation continued.

The six dead were Juntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57 years old; Yamil Martinez Andrade, 21; Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and Divasya Turner, 29.
