Bored monkey avatar collector loses $567,000 NFTs in direct swap scam

Non-fungible token (NFT) hacks are on the rise again, and this time the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collector has been scammed. Boring monkey holder named ‘s27’ missing gum monkey and matching spikes worth $567,000 after swapping NFTs on an exchange called ‘Swap.Kiwi’. This platform allows direct NFT swaps between collectors, with reduced transaction fees.

BAYC NFT is owned by celebrities such as basketball icon Steve Curry, music artist Post Malone, and even American TV host Jimmy Fallon.

The Twitter account ‘quit’, which tracks all the popular NFT monkey avatars, said its Discord server is configured to track BAYC listings that are at least 5 percent below their base price in Ether. “Sounds are rare, but when they do occur, it generally means one of two things: someone is panic selling, or someone has been compromised. When I saw notice #1584, I knew right away it was the latter,” the user said.

‘s27 moved this monkey from his vault to another wallet, only to lose it shortly thereafter. The aggregator traded NFT on swapkiwi, a trading site similar to NFTtrader or SudoSwap. These platforms allow trading of NFTs. The user noted that “the collector started a trade to lose monkeys, which is certainly not normal behaviour.” Crypto enthusiasts decided to play with KiwiSwap and see how this could happen.

“There is nothing inherently wrong with KiwiSwap. The contract is secure and does what it is supposed to do. But there are critical flaws in the UI/UX,” the user added.

The scammer added “verified” checkmarks to NFTs exclusively to make them appear legitimate on swapkiwi.

This isn’t the first time the BAYC NFT collector has been scammed. Earlier in March, the NFT holder sold BAYC NFT Worth $350,000 for a meager $115. This seemed to be either a hack or an honest mistake, but it cost the collector a fortune.

In December, someone It sold NFT worth Rs 2.27 crore for Rs 2.27 thousand. According to a report by CNET, NFT that sold for $3000 was supposed to be listed for 75 Ethereum (ETH) at around $300,000. However, the owner of NFT, using the username maxnaut, ended up with a misspelling and entered a list price of 0.75 ETH instead of 75 ETH.
