American Indie Icon Kelly Richardt, to receive the Locarno Honorary Award

American writer Kelly Richart, an icon of the international film community thanks to her distinctive “slow cinematic” style, will be honored by the Locarno Film Festival with the Bardo de Honore Manor Life Achievement Award.

Since debuting in 1994’s “River of Grass,” Richard has followed her own unique spin as a veritable breakaway from independent cinema for nearly a quarter century and dozens of acts including “Old Joy,” “Wendy and Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Night Moves.” and “First Cow” – which opened in Locarno in 2020 – cemented its reputation as one of the most distinguished voices in cinema today.

Richardt’s new photo, “Appearance”, is expected to premiere in Cannes in May.

The Swiss festival dedicated to independent and cutting-edge cinema was described in a statement by Richard Films, which also edits them, as “It features extensive research on realism and is distinguished by proudly independent creative and production processes. “

“Rewriting the codes of popular genres—thrillers, westerns, road movies—allowed Richardt to shift her gaze to new, previously marginalized perspectives that reveal her unusual approach, while bringing urgent and substantive issues to the fore such as women’s empowerment and the environmental crisis,” Locarno’s statement also said.

Technical Director Locarno Giona A. Nazzaro noted that the festival has chosen to celebrate Reichardt’s 75th anniversary, a time in which we “look back over the years” and is also an “opportunity to imagine the future”. Nazareau described Richardt as “a benchmark for contemporary cinema that is vibrant and constantly evolving” and “reflects our desire to look forward, embracing diversity and change”.

Richard will receive a Locarno pardon on August 12 in Piazza Grande in Locarno.

Locarno fans will have the opportunity to meet Richardt during a public conversation onstage the next day, on August 13, and watch “Meek’s Cutoff” (2010) and “Night Moves” (2013) as part of the honors.

Recipients of the Locarno nod include Samuel Fuller, Jean-Luc Godard, Ken Loach, Sidney Pollack, Abbas Kiarostami, Ukrainian director Kira Muratova and Agnes Varda.

The 75th edition of Locarno will take place from 3 to 13 August 2022.
