Apple TV Mega Series ‘Metropolis’ Filmed in Australia

Set to be produced in Australia, “Metropolis” is an epic Apple TV+ series based on the classic silent sci-fi movie from Fritz Lang. It is expected to make extensive use of a new “virtual production” structure that is among the largest in the world.

“Mr. Sam Ismail, the creator of the robot”, is a writer, director and organizer of the eight-part project. It is produced by NBCUniversal’s Universal Studio Group.

The story takes place in the futuristic metropolis. While the city’s wealthy elite enjoy a luxurious life of comfort and convenience in penthouses and pleasure gardens, dozens of workers work the dangerous machinery in the bowels of the city to keep everything running. Frieder Fredersen, the son of the most powerful man in Metropolis, wakes up after meeting a young worker named Maria and witnesses the death of several workers in an industrial accident.

The project has been approved to receive grant funding from the Victorian Screen Incentives, which is managed by VicScreen, the Victorian Screen Industry Support Authority. You will likely be eligible for federal production incentives administered by Screen Australia.

The Victorian government is also supporting Metropolis by supporting the construction of a state-of-the-art virtual production infrastructure, including one of the largest permanent “LED storage units” – high-tech digital displays that display background environments and visual effects on a set.

These virtual production techniques have been used in the “Star Wars” spin-off “The Mandalorian” and infrastructure is being built in production centers around the world. After use by Metropolis, the Victoria LED space will remain in place for use by other international productions and for domestic films and series.

VicScreen said “Metropolis” is the first in a series of projects from the NBCU, which is expected to inject A$416 million ($xxx million) directly into the Victorian economy over a number of years.

Metropolis alone is expected to create 3,980 local jobs, including 500 Victorian actors and staff, and more than 2,400 additional jobs. About 600 businesses and service providers in Victoria will benefit from local production.?

said Matt Fitins, chief operating officer of Matchbox Pictures, who will manage production services on the project.

“Metropolis is set to be one of the most technically ambitious productions of screens in the world, and the state-of-the-art infrastructure being built here, along with our outstanding staff and locations, truly puts Melbourne is among the best screen production cities in the world.

The NBCU series “La Brea” and “Clickbait” were filmed in Victoria. The science fiction drama Foe, directed by Garth Davis and starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, has recently concluded. Local director Michael Grassi is currently preparing to shoot Robbie Williams’ “The Best Man” in the state.
