Documentary about Andy Kaufman’s production – News Movie in Brief

Morgan Neville’s Tremolo Productions is producing an untitled documentary about Andy Kaufman alongside Elara Pictures for director Josh and Benny Safdie. Emmy-nominated Alex Braverman will direct the feature film.

“No matter how many times I watch Andy Kaufman’s work, I feel like I’m seeing a magic trick for the first time,” Braverman said. “I am excited for our project to honor that. This is the movie I have wanted to make my whole life.”

The Safdie brothers will implement the project alongside Rick Rubin and Braverman’s father, Chuck Braverman, who produced the 1980 Kaufman special “Andy Kaufman Plays Carnegie Hall”. Jennifer Westphal, founder and CEO of Wavelength, will also carry out production.

Wavelength and Tremolo previously worked together on Mr. Roger’s 2018 documentary Wouldn’t You Be My Neighbor? Directed by Neville. This documentary also marks the second time that Neville and Robin have worked together on a project, the first example being Showtime’s “Shangri-La” documentary series.

The production team on the project signed an exclusive deal to bring Kaufman lead creative partners Bob Zmuda and Lynne Margulis Osgood to the project. The production also acquired exclusive rights to Kaufman’s core films and early works along with never-before-seen footage and soundtracks.
