WhatsApp improves group chats with message reactions and more

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging (IM) applications worldwide. Billions of people depend on the Meta-owned service to call their loved ones for free. We also use it to reach businesses, get deliveries, and provide customer support. Despite its slow development when compared to some of its competitors – such as Telegram – WhatsApp still dominates in many regions around the world. One of the primary features that the instant messaging app offers is group chats. Users can contact multiple people at once for any reason. WhatsApp has officially announced that it is bringing several improvements to groups. This includes reactions to messages, large file sharing, and other additions we’ve been hearing about for months. The company has also teased communities – an upcoming tool that will make managing many groups easier.

Communities

Today in a blog post, WhatsApp announced that it is bringing several improvements to group chats. These include communities – a feature the company will launch later this year. When it sees the light, this add-on will allow users to combine several related groups in a way that makes sense for them. WhatsApp says:

Communities on WhatsApp will enable people to bring together separate groups under one umbrella with a structure that works for them. This way people can receive updates sent to the entire community and easily organize small discussion groups about what interests them. Communities will also have powerful new tools for admins, including advertising messages that are sent to everyone and controlling which groups can be included.

Other WhatsApp Features

Apart from the communities, WhatsApp has revealed many new features coming to group chats. The additions are:

  • Share larger files – up to 2GB.
  • Message reactions – start with six emojis and expand to all emojis on the way.
  • Delete message privileges for administrators – Allow them to delete a message sent by any member to all users.
  • Bigger Voice Calls – A new dedicated button will allow up to 32 people to join an audio call in a group chat.

It is unclear when these features will be rolled out to users, but we expect to see them very soon. However, users interested in Communities may have to wait a few months – because this special feature is coming Later this year.
