Pietro Marcello’s “The Scarlet” opens two weeks of Cannes Managers

The French-language drama “Scarlet” by Pietro Marcello is set to open the 54th edition of the Directors’ Week in Cannes on May 18.

Weaving in musical and fantasy elements, set in northern Normandy, between two world wars, a time of great inventions, the film follows the journey of a young woman raised by her father, a widower of war veterans, as she strives to find her way in life.

Marcello, a critically acclaimed Italian filmmaker whose work includes Venice Award winner Martin Eden, penned the script with his regular screenwriting partner Maurizio Braucci (“Gomora”), as well as Maud Amelin (“Amanda”), with novelist Genevieve. Presac.

“Scarlet” is produced by Charles Gilbert at CG Cinema (“Mustang”, “Annette”) with Avventurosa and Rai Cinema in Italy, in collaboration with Ilya Stewart (Hype Film) and Antonio Miyakawa (Wise Pictures). Orange Studio handles international sales while Le Pacte distributes it in France.

The film is titled by Juliette Joan, Raphael Thierry (“Staying Upright”), Louis Jarrell (“DNA”), Noemi Lvovsky (“Camille Rewinds”), and others.

The full lineup of Fortnight directors will be revealed on April 19. This year will see Paolo Moretti’s third and final release as technical director of the programme.

More is coming.
