WWE has changed the names of a number of superstars in recent months due to a new rule introduced by Vince McMahon. Two names starting the tours on social media over the weekend are Dakota Kay and Andy Hartwell, who have been rumored to have the new names Clarice Rivers and Indiana Hello. Fightful Select dropped a new report on Sunday that neither of these name changes occurred.
the report I also noticed that Kai’s name is registered by WWE (it’s not part of her real name and her independent wrestling name was Evie). Hartwell has previously used this name in the independent scene, but it is not known if she will have to change her name.
Wrestlers who have recently undergone name changes are Raquel Gonzalez, Walter, Marcel Barthel, Kai Lee Ray, Casey Catanzaro and Austin Theory. Dave Meltzer explained in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter why McMahon instituted the new rule and who is likely to influence (and who will be exempt).
“The real story behind this is all the talent that got a warrant and Vince McMahon decreed that he didn’t want any new people to use their real names anymore, nor the ones they used before on the independent scene,” Meltzer Books. “He became Walter Gunther because Walter was his real name and a name he used in the indie scene. Raquel Gonzalez kept Raquel (not her real name) but had to drop Gonzalez (her real name). Many thought the Austin theory dropped Austin because Steve Austin, but that’s actually Because his real name is Austin White. Raul Mendoza is a WWE name, except that Raul is really his first name, so he had to give it up. As always, the note only applies to people who are newer and who decided to apply to him. Randy won’t change Orton to Frank Trevino, Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey. It would be weird if Riddle had to change his name because Riddle really is his last name, but that seems to apply mostly to people just coming to the main roster and it doesn’t apply to Cody Rhodes. Humberto Carrillo is not a paid name. But his real first name is Humberto. It must have been Pete Dunne Butch.”
For Marcel Barthel, who knows that someone didn’t like the name in the past because Marcel Barthel was a name owned by WWE and never used until WWE. But from that point on, they don’t want anyone new to use previous names from elsewhere or a first name Or the real last. Unless you’re Gable Steveson. And that will change soon enough as it always does.”
