Just weeks after launching CNN Plus, the company revealed that it will be shutting down the streaming site.
The news was shocking to many as the company launched its first streaming service two weeks ago.
While the company has plans to expand services through its online platform, it appears that it has decided to take a different turn.
Why is CNN Plus closing?
CNN plus closed because the company recently became part of Warner Bros. Discovery.
This was also confirmed by Chris Licht, Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide in a statement to from the inside. “When we become Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN will be the most powerful part of WBD’s live broadcasting strategy that envisions news as an important part of a broader, compelling offering alongside sports, entertainment and factual content,” the statement read.

The statement continued, “We have therefore made the decision to discontinue CNN+ operations and focus our investments on CNN’s core newsgathering operations and in building more CNN Digital. This is not a decision about quality; we appreciate all the work, ambition, and creativity that has gone into building CNN+, an organization with talent.” Brilliant and compelling programming. But our customers and CNN will get the best of it with a simpler broadcast option.”
Is anyone leaving the company?
While most employees will continue to stay with the company, it was announced that Andrew Morse, the CEO who would have run CNN Plus, will be leaving.
“We are grateful to Andrew for his significant contributions to CNN Digital and CNN+ over the years. He and his team have created a high-quality roster of rich, engaging content and have helped produce and distribute CNN journalism around the world on a variety of platforms,” the statement read.

When was CNN Plus launched?
CNN Plus launched on March 29 and users had to pay $5.99 per month if they wanted to take advantage of the service.
Through the streaming service, users have been given access to both old and new content. With CNN Plus coming to a close, it’s not clear what new services the upcoming streaming platform will offer.
