Box office: “Bad Guys” No. 1 opens; Northman’s $12 million projects

On a busy weekend at the local box office featuring Men of the North, Fantastic Beasts and Nicolas Cage – oh my! – “The Bad Guys” outperformed the competition. DreamWorks Animation is expected to take first place in its opening weekend.

Universal’s “The Bad Guys” is expected to open $25 million from 4,009 locations — more than enough to land at number one. Although that number is far from the film’s $70 million production budget, it’s a promising start for the future’s first entry in a family-friendly franchise. “The Bad Guys” has already exceeded box office expectations, which forecast an opening weekend of between $15 million and $20 million. That would have put the film in a tight battle with the theatrical remnants of “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.”

Reviews were largely favorable for “The Bad Guys,” with the DreamWorks production currently earning an 85% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. miscellaneous Guy Lodge wrote that director “Pierre Pérevel’s cartoonish fun may be trivial, but it’s still the most engaging show from DreamWorks Animation in many years.” Audience reactions were also strong, with general moviegoers giving a glowing “A” score in the film’s Cinema Score.

With no kid-friendly animated movies on the calendar until Pixar’s “Lightyear” in June, “The Bad Guys” has plenty of shows to tap into in the coming weeks.

With “The Bad Guys” taking the top spot, the other two wide releases released this weekend — “The Northman” and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” — are looking to land in fourth and fifth.

More is coming…
