Dealing head-on with supernatural threats, the series has brought with it some of the most terrifying moments in the series. Nothing’s scary, though, like the first episode sequence when Joncho chases Stephen Grant (Oscar Isaac) through his apartment building. The moment itself was a favorite of cinematographer Gregory Middleton, who said the sequence is designed to set the tone for how the show plays through its remaining episodes.
“I think one of the highlights in the first episode is when Steven gets kicked out of his apartment by seeing the reflection in the mirror that Mark actually warned him about and Khuncho makes the lights flash,” Middleton says of the scene. The director says he fought for the sense of mystery in the sequence, so the suspense is going to get intense.
“When he’s in the elevator and he goes up the second leg on the floor and it’s just a little silhouette in the door and the whole frame is black and it’s completely dark in the hallway…I really wanted to fight to use the darkness in this way to make it happen when it’s so mysterious.” “And it really tells you what Stephen feels like, Is that not good. Is it? And then we get a little flash of Concho in the front. That was a big part of one thing we wanted to do. And just cuddling is just strictly from a photographic point of view, to get on this contrast.
The end result, Middleton says, is a gritty sequence that seems to be ingrained in our world, adding, “So that’s actually more terrifying for Stephen and it’s more deeply rooted like that.”
Middleton adds, “We wanted to feel like a real world as possible. We shot as many real locations as possible. I mean, we went to the desert in Jordan, and we want to see and feel it. It’s a disingenuous thing to try to find photographic things that would work that way.” Without advertising yourself too much.”
Four episodes of moon knight It’s now streaming on Disney+, and new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
