It’s time for the New York Times to provide the player with a database of valid Wordle solutions. Gamers are struggling with the Wordle puzzle today because of how the word is made. Wordle today shares its last four letters with several other words, which will likely frustrate players and force them into a guessing game if they can’t weed out other potential solutions. After PESTO guessed my second guess, I assumed I had two different sets of words left that could be the answer. The first were words ending in -ESTY, such as ZESTY or TESTY, while others ended in -ESTS such as BESTS, TESTS, or RESTS. In the end I chose BESTS as my third guess, which canceled out the last word combination and opened the door for me to get the correct answer on the fourth try.
However, my personal frustrations with Wordle today came after I solved the puzzle. I’d like to check out WordleBot, a Wordle solution bot program hosted by the New York Times, to compare solutions and see what steps I could have taken to improve my Wordle process. WordleBot told me that my third BESTS guess was a “missed guess” because that word couldn’t be a potential solution for Wordle today.
Since BESTS is a valid word in the English dictionary and was not omitted by my first two guesses, this can only mean one of two things. Either WordleBot is wrong or the word does not appear in the list of potential Wordle solutions that the game randomly chooses when choosing a puzzle of the day.
