Platino Awards Javier Bardem, The Good Boss, The Kingdom

Oscar-winner Fernando Leon de Aranoa and Argentine Netflix series “The Kingdom” proved major winners Sunday night at the 9th Platino Awards, which also honored Javier Bardem for his groundbreaking performance in workplace comedy Leon de Aranoa.

Penelope Cruz has already received an Academy Award nomination, winning the Audience Award for Pedro Almodovar’s Parallel Mothers in Platinos, the largest kudocast for films and series from Latin America, Spain and Portugal whose gala was held at the IFEMA Palacio Municipal in Madrid.

Altogether, The Good Boss kicked off with Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor (Bardem), Original Music (Zeltia Montes) and Editing (Vanessa Marimbert), adding new honors to a clean-up feature at Spain’s Goya Academy in Fenruary Awards, which took home six major nods from Goya scored 20 nominations.

Starring Javier Bardem in one of the major accomplishments of his career, “The Good Boss” is a grimly humorous depiction of a seemingly improved but ultimately evil patron as well as workplace power dynamics.

The film was also shortlisted for the Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category. Produced by Reposado PC and The Mediapro Studio, in collaboration with MK2, the film brings together the main talent behind “Mondays in the Sun” (2002). The New York-based Cohen Media Group has all US rights.

An eight-episode series, produced by Netflix’s “The Kingdom” (“El reino vacío”) produced by Argentine K&S Films (Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan”) and created by screenwriter Claudia Pinheiro (Nicolás Gil’s “Dark Buildings – A Crack in the Wall””) and director Marcelo Pinheiro (“The Method”).

The show took on the series creator and supporting actor (Joaquín Furriel). Chino Darín, Nancy Dupláa, and Furriel star in a psychological thriller in which an Argentine presidential candidate is murdered to be replaced by the leader of an evangelical church. The series topped the Netflix charts in Argentina. The second season is in production.

welcome her diverse Parallel Mothers has received three official awards as Almodóvar’s best film since “All About My Mother”. Aitana Sanchez Gijón got the supporting actress. The Original Music and Art Direction Awards went to regular collaborators Almodóvar Alberto Iglesias and Antxon Gómez respectively. Mazaya Almodovar won Best Film and Actress (Penelope Cruz).

Juan Pablo Felix’s “Carnaul” won its first thriller set against the backdrop of malambo dance culture on the border between Argentina and Peru. Edson Sidonie’s Bikini Films is produced in Buenos Aires.

Blanca Portillo won Best Actress for Iciar Bollaín’s “Maixabel” as she plays the real-life Maixabel Lasa, a woman who campaigns for reconciliation in the Basque Country, despite her husband’s murder by the ETA terrorist group.

“Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon” by Jose Zelada kicked off Peru, the United States and the Netherlands with an animated feature. The feature was sold by Edward Neulltner’s film management group, and has grossed $12 million at the global box office, despite being released in theaters during the pandemic.

Best Documentary Winner of the 2021 Berlinale Panorama Audience Award, Luis Bolognese’s “The Last Forest” is a depiction of illegal mining in the lands of the Yanomami, an indigenous people who live in the rainforest border between Brazil and Venezuela.

Honorary Platino Award won by Carmen Mora, legendary star of Almodovar title achievement – “Women are on the verge of a nervous breakdown,” “What have I done to deserve this?” – who went on to build her career in France, winning a Cesar Award for her performance in “The Women on the 6th Floor” by Philippe Le Guay.

The Platino Awards are promoted by Madrid-based Egeda, the largest human rights association in the Spanish-speaking world, and the Federation of Ibero-American Film and Audiovisual Producers (Fipca).

The number of theater performances submitted for awards ranged from 701 in 2014 to 907 in 2019. Due to the decline in first theater performances triggered by the pandemic, the number of shows submitted to Platino has decreased. But it hardly fell – this year to 811.
