Midsmar Producers Steal the Helicopter with Ronnie Sandal

B-Reel Films, the Swedish banner behind “Midsommar”, has been hired to produce a thriller film series based on the true crime novel “The Helicopter Heist” by Jonas Bonnier, and has attached Ronnie Sandal (“Borg vs McEnroe”) as creator and writer.

With offices in Stockholm and Los Angeles, B-Reel has acquired the rights to the popular novel from the Swedish literary agency Salomonsson, and is adapting it into an eight-episode, character-driven suspense series. The rights to the novel were previously acquired by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories banner in 2016, being developed as a feature, but the project failed.

The plot is based on the true story of four young Swedish men who orchestrated one of the most spectacular daylight robberies of all time in 2009 and used a stolen Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter to land on the roof of the G4S cash services building in Stockholm. They stole over $4 million in cash.

“I have long dreamed of writing the ultimate heist story. For me, this is the story: Icarus’s frenetic and hilarious story about winning, or losing, everything,” Sandal said.

Sandahl’s adaptation of the novel will include exclusive new material and details that will put the heist in a new perspective.

B-Reel has had successful productions ranging from “Midsommar” starring Florence Pugh to “I’m Greta,” “Thunder in My Heart,” “The Gathering,” and “I’m Zlatan.”

Johannes Hollande, who recently produced “The Congregation,” another gritty series based on Bonnier’s true crime novels, will also produce “The Helicopter Heist.”

“We have big ambitions with this and it will take a big budget, but we can also see that this story and the creative team that we are starting to build means that it has great potential to reach audiences around the world,” Hollande said, adding that B – Ryle has been talking to Sandal for years to find the right project.

The show will be produced by Ulf Synnerholm and Fredrik Heinig at B-Reel Films. “We have worked systematically with a focus on creativity and being the partner of choice for the best Scandinavian talent, and this has allowed us to continue the strong production delivered in 2021 with a really strong roster of new projects coming,” Heinig said.

Sennerholm said the company’s “aspiration with ‘The Helicopter Heist’ and collaborating with Ronnie Sandahl is to create something of the highest international level to make an impact throughout the world of television.”
