Microsoft adds Game Bar for Windows 11 controller users

Microsoft announced today that Windows Insiders can test the Control Bar. Basically, this is a different view of the Game Bar designed for people who use consoles. It will give you access to game shortcuts and more.

First, you’ll see that when you pair your Xbox console with your PC, assuming you’re in the Dev or Beta channel of the Windows Insider Program. If you press the Xbox button on your console, while you’re in a game, the control bar will launch and you’ll see widgets instead of game shortcuts.

This is a noticeable change. If you are a fan of games on Windows 11, you are probably familiar with the Game Bar, which you can use to record games, take screenshots, and a lot more thanks to third-party tools. However, it is greatly optimized for those who use a mouse and keyboard, right from the Win + G shortcut you would probably use to open it.

Playing games with a console on a PC might not be the most popular way in the world, but people do. In fact, Microsoft definitely has telemetry to prove it, and it continues to work hard to make gaming with a console a more positive experience for its users.

In order to get started, you must be on Windows 11 build 225xx or higher, and an Xbox Insider. You can download the Xbox Insider Hub from the Microsoft Store, where you’ll be able to sign up for the new Game Bar experience. Once you sign up and reboot, you’ll see the controller bar once you’ve paired or connected a controller.

As for when to ship, that’s anyone’s guess. The Xbox Game Bar is updated through the Store, so although the minimum update requirement is currently build 225xx, Microsoft may decide to push this at any time.
