Google released Android 13 Beta 1 for Android TV and Google TV

Thanks to developer previews and beta releases, we already know a lot about Android 13. However, most of the changes we’ve documented so far have been related to smartphones and tablets. Information about what the next version of Andriod brings for TVs and streaming devices has been few and far between. But that’s changing now that Google has released Android 13 Beta for TV, giving us our first look at the next version of the Android TV platform.

The first beta version of Android 13 TV has been released, allowing developers and power users to get a peek at the new Smart TV interface. However, you cannot just install the latest beta on your existing Android TV/Google TV. To experience Android 13 TV on a physical device, your only option is ADT-3, an Android TV dongle for developers. Alternatively, you can use the Android Emulator for TV within Android Studio, which is the easiest way to get the new software.

As far as the visual changes are concerned, Android 13 TV does not look significantly different from Android 12 TV. As noted by Mishaal Rahman, the first beta version does not include previously revealed features such as an expanded Picture-in-Picture mode and Fast Pair support. Google notes that “More customizations will be introduced in Android to improve the experience and compatibility on TV with each release.”

Android 13 for TV was also previously shown as running a new “low power standby” that can disable wakelocks and cut off network access for apps to conserve power. However, it is not immediately clear if this change takes effect in the first beta.

If you own an ADT-3 developer device, you can download and flash the Android 13 system image manually on your test device.
