Google I/O has seen a bunch of major announcements, including the likes of the Pixel 6a and some details about what’s coming with Android 13 later this year. Google has too announce Some of the long-awaited changes to Android Auto, including an updated design and completely new features.
We have heard about Android Auto design can already be updatedBut there was no indication of when it would arrive. The main addition to Android Auto is the new split screen mode, which ensures that all the most popular features are easily available – the idea being that you don’t have to navigate the app menu on your home screen while driving.
The split screen also comes with always-on navigation and media. After all, there’s nothing worse than missing out on your turn because you had to do something that Google Assistant couldn’t detect for some reason.
The best part is that the new design is able to adapt to a specific vehicle’s display – regardless of its size or design.
Speaking of Google Assistant, Android Auto and Google Assistant will come close with a new update. The Assistant will get the ability to provide contextual suggestions while you’re driving, because the less you focus on Android Auto, the more focused you can be on the road ahead.
Examples provided by Google include returning missed calls, sharing access times, and personalized music recommendations.
If you’d rather not use your voice to communicate when you’re on the road, Android Auto offers a range of ways to communicate with a single tap. The supported options would be the ability to call your favorite contacts and choose a suggested reply to quickly send messages.
If you drive one of the rare cars that has Google’s Android Automotive OS, you’ll also find that there is slightly better streaming support. We still don’t get support for the likes of Netflix, but Tubi TV and Epix Now will join YouTube as streaming options in your car, along with the ability to surf the web. Of course, security reasons mean that video streaming apps will only work when the car is not moving.
Google is promising that the new Android Auto design will be rolled out “just in time for summer”. That suggests it will arrive sometime between now and the end of June – although an exact launch date hasn’t been announced.
