AUO displays 480Hz screens for laptops and monitors

If you thought 360Hz gaming monitors were overkill for the majority of people, monitor manufacturer AUO has something that might surprise you. During SID Display Week 2022 (which is this week), AUO showed off a batch of new monitors it’s working on (first spotted by computer base), including two panels with a massive 480Hz refresh rate.

The panels come in two sizes: a 24-inch model for desktop monitors, and a 16-inch version for laptops. Both panels come in Full HD, as you might expect for such a high frame rate. A desktop monitor uses a TN panel, which should have faster pixel response times, and makes more sense for displays with a higher refresh rate. AUO touts a response time of less than 1ms for this model. Meanwhile, the laptop screen has a response time of between 1ms and 2ms, although the AUO video isn’t very specific.

Gaming monitors have become increasingly fast in recent years, with 360Hz panels becoming widely available just a couple of years ago. You shouldn’t take this announcement to mean that AUO’s 480Hz displays will be available in consumer products any time soon, as they still need to be sent to manufacturers, and companies must design matching controllers and display processors to power this type of panel. However, it is bound to happen at some point.

That’s not all AUO was shown at the event, with other panels including a 34-inch WQHD curved monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 200Hz refresh rate, and DisplayHDR 1000 support; 16-inch 2.5K display with Quad HD resolution and 240Hz refresh rate, also with HDR 1000. These panels use AmLED (Adaptive mini-LED) technology to deliver higher contrast ratios and brighter colors. In addition, a 4K panel was also shown with a refresh rate of 160 Hz.

You may not know AUO by name, but the company makes a lot of the panels inside popular laptops and monitors. It should only be a matter of time until these start making their way into consumer products.
