Box office: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Second Weekend Beats ‘Firestarter’

The sorcerer continues to dominate the plurality of North American madness. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” should top the domestic box office in its second weekend.

Marvel superhero Part Two earned $16.7 million on Friday from 4,534 sites, down 81% from its massive opening-day credit of $90 million a week earlier. As with most Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, Strange 2 reveals itself as a major box office, although there isn’t much on the May release slate that seems to spark a lot of competition except for the focus features “Downtown Abbey: A New Era.” next week and “Top Gun: The Dissident” at Paramount Memorial Day Weekend.

After an expected drop from the die-hard opening day tally, the “Multiverse of Madness” should balance out to around 67% a drop over the weekend. This is on the steeper side of Marvel Studios’ sophomore year weekend, although with the 11th largest domestic debut ever, there’s nowhere to go from there but down.

Disney announced Friday that “Strange 2” has crossed $550 million worldwide in just nine days. The movie should cross the $300 million GDP mark sometime over the next week.

Directed by Sam Raimi, “Doctor Strange 2” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the superhero alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Zuchitl Gomez. diverseThe sequel review described it as “both entertaining and exhausting,” with Owen Gleiberman calling it “an unexpected journey, a CGI horror jam, a Marvel mind-blowing contest and, in some moments, a little ordeal.”

Stephen King’s “Fire Starter” is the only wide-ranging notable release this weekend. The new horror version earned $375,000 in Thursday previews, and also landed the day and date on Peacock. The film has no positive reviews on its part, with diverseGleiberman wrote that “everything playing like ‘Logan’ was done in the worst drab, no-rhythm general style made for live broadcasts.”

Starring “Firesterter,” directed by Keith Thomas, starring Ryan Keira Armstrong, Sydney Lemon, Courtwood Smith, John Beasley, Michael Gray and Gloria Rubin.

More is coming…
