Only Murders in the Building: Nathan Lane, James Caverly i Amy

One of the top contenders for this year’s Emmy is Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which could be one of the industry’s most-nominated comedy series. Plus, the comedy series, which will drop its second season in the middle of voting for an Emmy nomination, could make history for two stand-up comedy shows with guest actors – Nathan Lane and James Caverly.

Lane may become the most-nominated actor in the comedy guest category history (beginning in 1975), while Caverly would be the first deaf actor ever to be recognized.

Possibly the frontrunner to write and direct, especially in “The Boy From 6B,” the critically acclaimed seventh episode of its opening season, will be a highlight of Hulu’s run with the Academy of Television.

The owner of the Deli series, Teddy Dimas (Lynn) and his deaf son Theo (Caverly) are a big part of the season’s mystery unfolding to the viewer. Under my current guidelines, an actor can be cast if they appear in less than 50% of episodes.

Over the past two years, “Saturday Night Live” has triumphed with Dave Chappelle and Eddie Murphy winning awards. The Graphics series is the highest-grossing show in this category in history with seven figurines.

Lane is currently associated with the highest number of names ever for a guest comedy with five, along with the late Fred Willard. His spells were as a guest on classic shows such as “Frasier”, “Mad About You” and “Modern Family”. In addition to his other guest actor in the nominated drama “The Good Wife”, he has never won a Primetime Emmy. He has two Daytime Emmys for his voice work in “Timon and Pumbaa” and “Teacher’s Pet”.

Caverly will try to maneuver for a place alongside his co-star, but his chances are improving as the season progresses. With Troy Kotsur being the second deaf actor to win an Academy Award for Best Picture winning “CODA,” there is a renewed effort to recognize the most diverse acting talents, including the deaf community.

No deaf person has ever won an Emmy for acting. In fact, there has only been one person who has won an Emmy in 78 years in all categories – Juliana Field, executive producer who won Hallmark’s Outstanding Drama/Comedy “Love Is Never Silent” (1985). Despite giants like Marley Matlin, the first deaf actress to win an Academy Award, and garnering four nominations during her career, there is still a lot of work to be done in the field.

Driven by “The Boy From 6B,” whose words aren’t spoken until the last minute as he yells, “We did it,” Caverly reveals a range of feelings. Hit in both sad and heart-wrenching moments, and apparently the male “SNL” hosts aren’t looking to dominate as they once were (maybe Oscar Isaac and Jerrod Carmichael could land on the field?), perhaps history could be on its way?

It is possible that both co-stars will be able to score names.

The series featured Steve Martin and Martin Short as the lead actor in a comedy, while Selena Gomez will compete for the lead actress. Aaron Dominguez was introduced as Oscar, Gomez’s love interest, to support the actor, and Amy Ryan as Jean, Martin’s love, would be supporting the actress.

Applications from other guests include multiple Emmy Award winner Tina Fey.

Voting for the Emmy begins on June 16.
