“Top Gun: Maverick,” Tom Cruise’s long-awaited return to the danger zone, had to take a few turns due to COVID-19.
When the pandemic hit, the sequel to 1986’s Top Gun was supposed to open on June 24, 2020. Those plans had to be rearranged when theaters closed and he struggled to make a comeback. Now, at long last, Cruz was available in southern France on Wednesday for the Cannes premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick,” a critically acclaimed film that appears poised for box office fortunes. But did he ever think about sending the sequel to streaming, a fate that befell so many other films during the early days of the coronavirus?
“It’s not going to happen,” Cruz said during an extensive talk about his work at the festival.
The audience at the Debussy Theater in the Grand Palais applauded loudly. Cruz further explained, “I spend a lot of time with theater owners. The people who serve up the popcorn, they are the ones who make this. [happen]. “
The actor said he contacted the movie theater owners with a message: “Please, I know what you’re going through. Just know we’re making ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’ coming out.”
And Cruz was clear that he was not designing his films to stream on Netflix from Amazon Prime. He wants the high-flying movement to appear as wide as possible.
“I make movies for the big screen,” Cruz said.
The actor is one of those people who check movies into the multiplier. Cruz told a Cannes audience that he secretly goes to the cinema “with my hat” and “sit in the audience with everyone”.
Cruz injected some serious star ratings into Cannes, with fans already lining up to get a look at the actor before the movie’s premiere on the red carpet.
Cruz is currently filming sequels to “Mission: Impossible,” which has been plagued by multiplying budgets and production delays linked to the coronavirus.
