Reportedly, Electronic Arts has laid off up to 100 employees after the decision to part ways with FIFA’s license. For years, EA had the right to create games based on the FIFA license. This helped give EA a sports empire with Madden, FIFA, PGA, UFC, and, at one point, even the NBA and college baseball. It was such a big part of the publisher’s business that it even gave them the opportunity to render competitors like Konami useless with their competing titles. The tide changed as EA decided to create its own IP for football, independent of FIFA, and leave the license to take over.
however, Kotaku submits a report that EA has chosen to fire up to 100 employees at its Austin offices following the separation from FIFA. The employees most affected by this relate to customer service representatives who help with email, phone, and chat support for games like FIFA 22. The work will now reportedly be outsourced to an undisclosed group, but a source from Kotaku stated that the selection comes after “repeated complaints from EA Austin and Galway employees about insufficient annual increases consisting of $0.10 per hour”. An EA spokesperson stated that this was done to help create a better customer service experience for its users. The speaker also noted that this will lead to changing roles, “closing” other roles, and creating new ones. Another EA representative told Kotaku that this choice was not made as a direct result of a change in future football games from EA.
“Changes to our customer support function are not related to any one gaming franchise, nor are they related to us EA SPORTS FC Last week’s announcement,” an EA representative told Kotaku. The customer support function supports a wide range of players’ questions related to game titles and technology, including Origin or our EA Play subscription service. ”
As of now, it’s not clear how this will affect players’ experience with customer service. There is no word on when any of this will take effect, if it hasn’t already. EA is expected to release another FIFA game this year before it turns into EA Sports FC in 2023.
