Music Supervisor Robin Urdang for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”

Everything about Season 4 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was bigger, from the sets to the drama, and of course the music.

Returning songwriters Tom Myers and Curtis Moore were tasked with creating a range of sounds, including calypso, period-appropriate pop, a Broadway tune and several striptease numbers.

The two worked with the show’s musical supervisor Robin Urdang on Midge’s (Rachel Brosnahan) career hub, swapping Greenwich Village cafes for a Manhattan burlesque.

As Urdang explains, “We built on the show’s musical scoreboard using several hidden gems like ‘Femininity’ from ‘Oh, Captain’ in the last dance sequence at the comic club.”

In an extension of how the show uses music, Ordang says they’ve also created Mandarin-language versions of American standards for use on the Button Club’s music box, along with original songs written by Mizer and Moore for singer Shy Baldwin’s closed-door wedding.

Music has always played a large role in performances created by Dan Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino, but not necessarily in score form.

“Using existing songs as musical points presents its own challenges as they have to work perfectly on the visual,” Urdang says. Count Basie ‘Jumpin’ At The Woodside’ [is one example] During a comic club raid, various others. Sometimes this means registering additional hardware or adding beginnings or endings.”

As Stuart Lerman, Executive Music Producer of “The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel,” explains: “Amy and Dan are drawn to music in a really intense way. The music on the show is never so episodic.”
