Steam Deck Parts and Manuals Now Available on iFixit

After a premature offer, we finally got word that iFixit is now officially providing parts for Valve’s Steam Deck. In addition to parts, you will now also have access to Steam Deck guides for repair. On top of that, iFixit will also provide parts for Valve’s Index VR headset.

The company announced its partnership with Valve, enabling it to provide repair manuals and parts to users around the world. While repairing modern electronics has become somewhat difficult, Valve has taken the opposite approach, making its hardware accessible and repairable.

LED states:

The Steam Deck team is very excited about this program. We designed Steam Deck to be repairable, and it makes sense for us to work with iFixit to enable customers to repair and replace parts themselves.

But that’s something that Valve has been thinking for some time. Valve stated early on that it would provide parts for its portable console. At this time, Valve discussed how iFixit will become one of its partial suppliers. Fast forward a few months and this has become a reality, with users now having access to parts for their Steam Deck console.

Valve stated early on that it would provide parts for its portable console.

But what makes this fix possible is Valve’s attitude toward device production. The unit is installed with standard Phillips screws, which facilitates easy access to internal parts. For the internals, Valve has opted to use some modular parts, allowing users to easily replace the thumb sticks and upgrade the internal storage. Not every part is an easy fix, but most parts are built in such a way that they are easy to repair or replace.

Parts are available, but key parts such as batteries and motherboards are not available

In its findings, iFixit notes that Steam Deck has some issues when it comes to repairability, with the main battery-related issues glued to the inside case. There is also the issue of the USB Type C port, which is soldered to the board. Currently, there are a variety of parts available for Steam Deck, but some key components are missing. This includes but is not limited to the internal panels and the battery. But iFixit states that this will not always be the case, as more parts must be made available over time.
