Texas elementary school shooting leaves 14 students and 1 teacher dead

14 students and teachers were killed Tuesday after a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Ovaldi, Texas, according to Governor Greg Abbott.

The governor said the suspect, 18-year-old Salvador Romas, was also killed. “He believes the officers who responded were the ones who killed him,” Abbott said. Romas allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school. Her condition is unknown.

“He shot and killed in a horrific and incomprehensible manner 14 students and killed a teacher,” Abbott said, adding that two police officers were shot but were in stable condition.

The shooter was allegedly carrying a handgun and possibly a rifle. Uvald Medical Center said it was treating 15 students in the emergency department after the shooting. San Antonio University Health Hospital said it has two patients from the accident — a child and an adult woman who are in critical condition. The child’s condition is unknown. Children’s Hospital San Antonio said it was also treating patients for the shooting.

Politicians and celebrities took to Twitter to condemn the massacre and pray for the victims and their families.

LeBron James wrote, “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the lovers who were lost and injured at Robb Elementary School in Ovaldi, Texas! Like When Is A Man Enough!!! These are kids and we continue to hurt them at school. Like ‘AT SCHOOL’ seriously as it’s supposed to be the safest!”

Quinta Bronson, creator of Abbott Elementary, wrote, “It’s crazy because we keep living like this. Really don’t want to. Tired of gun violence.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz wrote, “Heidi and I offer prayers for the children and families of the horrific shooting in Ovaldi. We are in close contact with local officials, but the finer details are still unfolding. Thank you to heroic law enforcement and first responders for acting so quickly.”

In response to his tweet, Ana Navarro wrote: “If you are one of the weak cowards held hostage by the gun lobby and you are an obstacle to reasonable reform of the gun, Just shut up, now.”

More is coming…
