Matthew McConaughey responds after the school shooting in Texas Hometown

Matthew McConaughey issued a statement in response to news of a mass shooting at an elementary school in his hometown of Ovaldi, Texas. The massacre resulted in the deaths of at least 19 students and two adults, in addition to several others receiving treatment in local hospitals for the injuries they sustained during the incident.

The actor provided a response, Tuesday evening, via social media, extending his prayers to those affected by the tragedy, and calling on Americans to take action to combat the epidemic of gun violence.

McConaughey’s statement began, “As you all know, there was another mass shooting today, this time in my hometown, Ovaldi, Texas.” “Once again, we have tragically proven that we have failed to take responsibility for the rights our freedoms give us.”

“The real call to action now is for every American to take a longer and deeper look in the mirror, and ask ourselves, ‘What do we really value? How do we fix the problem? What small sacrifices can we make individually today, to maintain a healthier and safer nation, nation, and neighborhood tomorrow? McConaughey continues. “We cannot breathe again, make excuses and accept these tragic realities as the status quo.”

While McConaughey’s statement did not explicitly join the re-ignited wave of calls for tougher gun control legislation in the US, the actor describes the country’s recurring news of mass shootings as an “epidemic we can control.”

“No matter which side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better,” the statement continues. “Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents of Ovaldi and the others before them have experienced.”

McConaughey has been a movie actor for more than three decades, and he had considered campaigning in the Texas state race last year before making the final decision not to run for political office. McConaughey has never announced whether he will run for office with a particular political party or as an independent party.

President Joe Biden addressed the nation Tuesday night regarding the Ovaldi shootings in Texas, saying, “More than 900 shootings have been reported on the school grounds…I’m sick of it. We have to act. And don’t tell me we can’t affect it.” This massacre.”
