Star Wars Lucasfilm Panel: Obi-Wan, Skeleton Crowe, Harrison Ford

The future of Star Wars is coming to fans at the speed of light.

The launch of the Star Wars Celebration Thursday was the conference’s first in-person event since 2019, after the 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The crowd at the event at the Anaheim Convention Center was full of fans decked out in Mandalorian armor, Jedi cloaks, and Siths (many with added KN95 face masks). Starting from all over the country and abroad, fans queued outside the convention center for hours before the presentation. Inside the room, a lightsaber waved in the air as space was electrified from excitement.

To kick off the four-day event filled with Star Wars commercials, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen took to the stage in front of a full choir singing the iconic theme of “Duel of Fate.” Yvette Nicole Brown moderated the hour-and-a-half full session, which featured Lucasfilm’s top creators talking about upcoming Star Wars projects. From teasing the details of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” to revealing the new live-action show “Skeleton Crew” set to premiere next year, Star Wars is ready to dive into a new path, albeit without any major theatrical updates.

But one of the biggest stars to appear on Celebration wasn’t even there to talk about Star Wars — technically speaking. Harrison Ford, who starred in “Star Wars” as Han Solo, made a surprise appearance during Lucasfilm’s presentation to give an update on “Indiana Jones 5,” slated for release in theaters June 30, 2023. The presentation also showed the first look at The “Willow” sequel series on Disney+ led by Warwick Davis.

Here are the highlights from Lucasfilm’s action packed panel.

Star Wars attendees will watch the first two episodes of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” hours in advance.

To a raucous applause, MacGregor invited the Celebration audience to an exclusive screening of the first two episodes of the new show in a conference room at 7 p.m. PT, five hours before they air on Disney+. The show is open to all Star Wars Celebration attendees with the event’s wristband.

“Andor” is set to be a two-part epic.

The prequel series “Rogue One” debuted its first new trailer at the event, with “Andor” set to follow Diego Luna Cassian Andor and the rest of the Rebellion as they attempt to undermine the Empire. The teaser featured a first look at Stellan Skarsgård as the rebel leader and the return of Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. The first two episodes will premiere August 31 on Disney+, with a total of 12 episodes already in the box. Director Tony Gilroy revealed that the show will film another 12 episodes, which will include the second part of the series, starting in November. The second part will lead directly to the events of “Rogue One”. Gilroy also announced that Nicholas Brittle — composer on “Succession,” “Moonlight,” “If Beale Street Speaks” and more — will score the series.

Season 3 “The Mandalorian” will feature returning fan favorites, including Grogu.

“The Mandalorian” creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were there to stir up the excitement of the third season of the popular Disney+ show. A sneak peek, which was only available to those present, showed Pedro Pascal once again in combat with lovable Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) trying to pay retribution for his sin of taking off the helmet. Mandu vows to return to the original Mandalorian world in order to restore his honor. Along the way, it looks like Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) has turned for the worse and will be the opponent of the new season. Carl Withers also returned as Griff Karga. The third season will premiere in February 2023.

Favreau and Filoni also provided a quick update for the series Rosario Dawson starring “Ahsoka,” directed by Filoni. Since the show is in the middle of filming, Dawson did not appear in person at Celebration, so she sent out a video clip to apologize for her absence instead. This series is also set for 2023.

To a final surprise, Filoni has announced new details about his upcoming series with Favreau, John Watts and Christopher Ford. The series, officially titled “Skeleton Crew” and starring Jude Law, will begin broadcasting on Disney+ in 2023.

Happy 90th birthday John Williams!

The legendary composer turned 90 in February, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy kept the party going with Williams being honored in celebration. But the real boon was for fans, as Williams debuted with a full orchestra for his “Obi-Wan Kenobi” theme for the first time.

Williams then led the players on the theme of “Indiana Jones” “The Raider’s March,” as Harrison Ford and director of “Indiana Jones 5” took the stage to preview their new movie, which is almost finished shooting.

“It is a special honor for me to congratulate John on his 90th birthday,” Ford told the audience. “John, this music follows me everywhere I go… and I’m so happy.”

Ford and Mangold and producers Kennedy and Frank Marshall also unveiled an early image of the film, starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschman and Toby Jones. As with the previous four “Indiana Jones” films, Williams would compose the score again.

Williams ended Lucasfilm’s show by leading the orchestra at “The Imperial March” from Star Wars, before being presented by attendees they Gift – with the house full of singing to the composer “Happy Birthday”.
