Best Carey Mulligan Shows & Movies

Fifteen years in the game, English-born Carey Mulligan has proven to be one of the most talented and sexy actresses working today. With her Academy Award nomination, she delivered an amazing array of characters and performances, many of which the Academy should have recognized.

Many remember her debut in Joe Wright’s stunning Pride and Prejudice (2005) as Kitty Bennett opposite Keira Knightley. Her big break came when she got the lead role of Jenny in the upcoming drama “An Education” (2009). The film was nominated for Best Picture for the film by Lone Scherfig, the first Academy Award nomination for two Best Films directed by two women in the first category. The other was “The Hurt Locker” by Kathryn Bigelow, which won. Mulligan’s sadistic, systematic portrayal earned her a statuette for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination.

Following her nomination, Mulligan continued to explore challenging and dynamic roles over the next decade, working with some of the most talented actors and directors in Hollywood. As Erin, she surrenders to a driver (Ryan Gosling) in an elevator in Nicholas Winding Refn (2011). As Sissy, she showed heartbreak in the lyrics of the song “New York, New York” opposite Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen’s “Shame” (2011). Finally, as Jane, she shows frustration at choosing between Oscar Isaac and Justin Timberlake in the Coen Brothers’ masterpiece “Inside Llewyn Davis” (2013).

Her next Oscar nomination won’t happen until she is led by writer-director Emerald Fennell in the revenge drama Promising Young Woman (2020). The third of two films directed by women that were nominated for a first Academy Award, Mulligan took second place for her role as Cassie, a woman looking forward to the wrongdoing made by men who assaulted her girlfriend during college. Unfortunately, with a global pandemic unfolding, a shifting voting practice in the BAFTA resulting in horrible disdain, and a long awards season, the award was lost to Frances McDormand’s third game for “Nomadland.”

More is coming from wife of pioneer Mumford and Sons singer Marcus Mumford and mother of two. She will star opposite Adam Sandler and Paul Dano in Spaceman from Johann Renk. Expect to be in the awards conversation again when she takes on the reveal of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct in the #MeToo movement feature “She Said” opposite Zoe Kazan and director Maria Schrader. The film is scheduled to be released later this year and distributed by Universal Pictures.

She’s also in the middle of filming “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s next directorial effort, in which she will play Felicia Montenegro, wife of Leonard Bernstein. The movie will be released by Netflix and is expected to be in 2023.
