When “Grey’s Anatomy” premiered in 2005, it catapulted the ensemble cast who play the Seattle Grace Hospital staff to fame. For Sandra Oh, who played Christina Yang on the series for 10 years, that light came with its own downsides to her health.
The celebrity actress has opened up about the effects that the sudden fame of “Grey’s Anatomy” has had on her health during diverse “Actors on Actors” conversation, presented by Apple TV +, with “Squid Game” star Jung Ho-yeon. According to Oh, the experience of suddenly being in the spotlight caused her to suffer serious health effects while filming a medical drama on ABC.
“Honestly, I got sick. I think my whole body was very, very sick. Even though you keep working, it’s just like, ‘Oh, I can’t sleep.'” Oh, my back hurts, I don’t know what’s wrong with my skin,” Oh said during the conversation with Ho-yeon.
Oh shared the experience when Ho-yeon asked her how she handled getting the audience’s attention. However, Oh noted that their experience was completely different, with Oh dating back to the advent of social media.
“When Grey’s Anatomy came out, I think my life changed a lot,” Oh told Ho-yeon. “It’s hard to imagine, because that’s almost 20 years ago. So the context is very different. But the stress is the same, or the confusion is the same…when people are in very amazing, privileged positions, heavy responsibilities like this. Your personal health, I think. I realized, she came first.”
Reflecting on her experience with “Grey’s,” Oh Ho-yeon tells that she’s learned that she needs to be happy with herself in order to be at peace in the spotlight.
“I knew I had to take care of my health first,” Oh said. “But that’s not just your body. This is your soul. This is definitely your mind. Even those things like doubt and question. Because you ultimately can’t depend on anyone else. You have to find it somehow within you. You ask for people’s opinions, yes of course, But in the end, we are alone with ourselves.”
