Box Office: ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Wasted $142 Million Opening

“Jurassic World Dominion” is the new predator at the box office.

Universal’s sequel Dino movie is expected to earn $142.6 million from 4,676 theaters across North America over the weekend, marking the highest domestic opening for a non-superhero film since COVID-19 lockdowns were first introduced. This takes the throne off the $126 million benchmark set by the “Top Gun: Maverick” debut just two weeks ago.

After taking in $18 million in Thursday previews, Universal expected the sixth installment in the “Jurassic Park” franchise to earn $132.5 million over the weekend.

Going back to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 original, which was the highest grossing domestic ever upon its release, the “Jurassic Park” franchise has a box office legacy. The previous two films – “Jurassic World” in 2015 and the sequel “Fallen Kingdom” in 2018 – were grossed $208 million and $150 million, respectively.

With a production price of $185 million before marketing and distribution costs, “Jurassic World Dominion” will need to continue its run as a box office giant to see it go green.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow returns to the series, following up on his family, cum, suburban, thriller “The Book of Henry.” “Dominion” reunites original stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern with new-age stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard alongside newcomer DeWanda Wise.

Dominion was largely disliked by critics, with the film having an approval rating of 22% from top critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience seems to be more receptive, as is usually the case with the franchise. The Dinosaur sequel earned an “A-” cinema score, indicating strong responses from general ticket buyers. While this massive opening weekend generally proves to be a case against criticism, it remains to be seen how public word of mouth will land in the coming weeks.

in diverseIn his review, lead film critic Peter Debruge was kinder than most of his peers, writing that Dominion “comes as closely as possible a sequel to the frightening threat to coexistence between humans and dinosaurs in the Jurassic film series.”

Meanwhile, even though “Top Gun: Maverick” got a bit of a bite out of it by losing super-format theaters to “Dominion,” the Tom Cruise sequel still flies steadily. The film is likely to surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the highest-grossing release of the year at the domestic box office sometime in the coming weeks.

More is coming..
