Flag Day date

The first “American” flag, known as The Continental Colors, was created in 1775 as a signal to unite the colonists at war with the British during the American Revolution. However, George Washington, the first president of the American Republic, considered it too similar to the British Union flag and sought to redesign it.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress of the newly independent United States of America created the “Star-Spangled Banner” we know today. The flag resolution read: “It is resolved that the flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternating between red and white; that the union shall be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
