Apple M2 chip: why it matters
The Apple M2 chip has been an essential part of WWDC 2022 Keyword earlier in the month. Apple says the chip is expected to improve multi-core performance by 18% over its predecessor Apple M1 chip. The last standard test showed that the number may be closer to 20% (Opens in a new tab). The Apple M2 chip is also expected to get a 25% improvement in the GPU performance to power ratio compared to the M1 chip.
For users, this translates to up to 40% faster performance in Final Cut when editing complex timelines in a file MacBook Air M2 (2022). Applying filters in Photoshop also results in a 20% increase in performance compared to the M1 chip. Even with that power boost, Apple promises 18 hours of video playback versus 15 hours of wireless web browsing.
Apple also expects the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022) to be able to play up to 20 hours of video without needing a charge, something users aren’t likely to escape notice if true.
rumors about Apple M2 Pro chip It started filtering as well, but most of it hasn’t been confirmed yet. The most exciting rumor so far is that the M2 Pro chip may use the 3nm process instead of the 5nm process used in the Apple M2 chip and the Apple M1 family of chipsets. This should provide a greater performance boost than what the M2 chip already provides over the M1.
