We are approaching the end of season 8 of Sparkle, with the latest batch of episodes appearing at an unprecedented time for theaters in the larger DC multiverse. Thanks to a series of recent cancellations, Sparkle It is one of the last remaining shows within the CW’s Arrowverse franchise, which made DC Comics references even more noteworthy and unexpected. The series’ final episode was absolutely no exception to this rule, with a story involving John Diggle/Spartan (David Ramsey) which could have ramifications within the wider universe – and may have included a strange link with final crisisone of the most controversial events in the capital. A subplot of the episode centered around Eobard Thawne / Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) in his cell in Lian Yu Prison by John Diggle (David Ramsey). Diggle asked Thawne, with his knowledge of advanced technology, to help open the mysterious chest he had been holding for two years, but he was unable to open it. Through a chain of events, Thawne quipped that accepting the offer inside the box would determine Diggle’s fate, revealing that opening it would allow him to see his life in other universes. Diggle opened the chest and saw what those alternate universes had to offer, as Thawne remarked that he should “drink from the Bleed Mandrakk hiding inside the cube.”
Created by Grant Morrison and JJ Jones, Mandrake The Dark Monitor first appeared in Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1 in 2008. Also known as Dax Nofu, the character was one of the first to come to screens after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earth, and developed a normal life amidst the Monitor civilization with his wife Zillo Valla and son Nix Yotan. Through a series of events, Nouveau discovered that observers were exploiting the multiverse, and were locked away after this information was made public. He later banishes Nix to New Earth, and is apparently defeated by a group of Supermen, as New Earth’s Superman pushes him into Overvoid and destroys even a memory of him. Mandrakk’s mantle was later succeeded by Rox Ogama, who was played in events The final crisis. The comics later explored the idea that Mandrakk was eager to revive himself across The Bleed, the multidimensional level among all the multiverses.
While The CW’s DC shows have grappled with screen lore in the past—LaMonica Garrett filmed both The Monitor and The Anti-Monitor in the network crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths”—the idea of Mandrakk and The Bleed has been dropped on the name Sparkle Certainly surprising. For one thing, it adds an intriguing wrinkle to Diggle’s “cosmic fate,” which fans heavily inferred to be related to the Green Lantern Legion. There are also details that Ramsey will reprise his role as Diggle in the Season 2 finale Superman and Louis, which appears to be the main villain of the third season. Due to Mandrakk’s association with Superman in the comics – and the increasingly mainstream theory that Superman and Louis He might be set on an alternate Earth – it certainly wouldn’t be out of the question for him to be that villain.
