The Independent, which organizes an annual art fair each spring in New York, has announced 31 galleries will participate in its new gallery focused on 20th-century art, whose inaugural edition is set to take place in September at the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan.
Exhibitors lining up for the Independent 20th Century Collection, which will take place September 8-11 and coincide with the Arms Show, include Chem & Red, Corbett v. Dempsey, Garth Grenan Gallery, Karma, Parker Gallery, and Venus Over Manhattan. This edition will also see 15 galleries participate for the first time in any iteration of The Independent, including Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, James Fuentes, Susan Inglett Gallery, Nahmad Contemporary and Shin Gallery.

All exhibitors will present works by 20th-century artists whose practices have been overlooked or not recognized throughout history, in keeping with a trend that has been rising in the art world over the past decade, including museums and international biennials such as this Venice Biennale General.
Although the independent 20th Century Foundation will function as a commercial art gallery, not all works will be for sale, as some will come in the form of loans from private collections.
In a letter to ARTnews“Over the past 20 years, we have seen an increasing presence of historical bodies working in contemporary art fairs,” said Matthew Higgs, director of White Columns in New York who is organizing the exhibition with Independent director Elizabeth Dee. on the art of the present, while nearly 50 per cent of the artists in the current version can be described as “historic.” This tendency – framing “contemporary” through the lens of the past – is arguably the dominant narrative of curatorial work in this century. “.
He added, “The Independent Twentieth Century Company seeks to amplify the increasingly flexible idea of what constitutes ‘contemporary’ through a focused re-examination of the art produced in the last century.”
