Turning red became a fascinating phenomenon when it premiered on Disney+, with viewers of all ages becoming obsessed with the hilarious and emotional Disney/Pixar story. As much as the series surrounds the story of Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) and her ability to transform into a giant red panda, one of the highlights of the movie is definitely 4*Town, the fictional boy band of the ’90s. On Friday, it was announced that the story of 4*Town will be told in a new way, with the group getting their own manga style. manga Disney and Pixar Turn Red: 4*Town 4*Real: Mangawill be released by Viz Media in the second quarter of 2023, written by Dirchansky and illustrated by KAlfee.
According to the manga’s official description, “4*Townies are elated to see 4*Town perform their favorite songs live, but how will Canada’s greatest boy band spend the day before their epic concert in Toronto? Tae Young, Aaron T, and Aaron Z while enjoying a rare break in their schedules.” Jesse and Tae Young embrace their artsy side and visit a ceramics museum, Aaron T puts on his costumes at the mall, Aaron Z and Robeir stay at the dance studio to perfect their moves before the all-sold-out show. 4* Town’s original songs in the movie were penned by Billie Eilish and her brother, Phineas O’Connell, with the group creatively inspired by the likes of Backstreet Boys, N’SYNC, and Westlife, as well as contemporary K-Pop fandom.
“I feel like the media often makes fun of boy bands, as it’s most of the things that teenage girls care about,” director Dom Chee explained during a virtual press conference for the film earlier this year. “And with this movie, we really wanted to pay homage to this cultural phenomenon and not just make fun of it. We make fun of it a little bit, but we also honor it. It’s been the lives of many girls and boys shaped by early musical obsessions, and bands are, for many girls, Their first foray into adolescence, into music, fashion, and pop culture. They offer a safe, soft, non-threatening introduction to topics like love and relationships.”
