Ukraine, post-COVID tastes on the agenda at Sunny Side of the Doc

The current situation in Ukraine, international co-production and examination of audience tastes after COVID are on the agenda in 33 Sunny side of the document.

The International Marketplace for Documentary and Narrative Experiences held annually in La Rochelle, France, returns as an in-person event this year after two online editions that sparked a pandemic.

With the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine showing no signs of abating, Al Jazeera’s producer picker Leila Balkans and Philip Muller, commissioned editor at Arte, will discuss how they support Ukrainian films in a panel discussion. The talk will also touch on the question of how the Ukrainians will gain access to the major broadcasters since the film industry has been put on hold because local funds cannot support their projects, making the co-production process difficult. The creation of special joint production funds to support Ukraine and other countries in the same situation will be discussed.

Sunny Side of the Doc will also host a presentation of projects from the Ukraine Talent Hub.

Co-production is the lifeblood of the documentary filmmaking process and as usual, the event highlights this aspect. Among the key people attending the event were Yuko Fukuyama and Shin Yasuda, producers responsible for international co-production at Japanese radio station NHK, who will present the latest successful documentary projects produced in collaboration with global partners and share useful information for those looking for opportunities to work with NHK on projects Documentary. It will feature a panel on how to co-produce with Italy Fabrizio Zappi, director of Ray Documentary, Marco Vesalberghi, CEO, Doclab and Gioia Avantigiato, president of GA&A Productions. Likewise, it will feature a panel on how to co-produce with France Elodie Polo Ackermann, producer at Imagissime and Alexandre Corneau, producer at Les Films du Tambour de Soie.

In addition, there will be experienced co-production experts from Spain, Kenya, Canada, South Africa, Finland, France and Belgium, among others.

Heavyweight Panel, composed by Paul Heaney, CEO of Bosanova; Angela Nellis, Senior Vice President of Unscripted at Fremantle; Lauren Baxter, Head of Collectibles, Off the Fence; Gerbrig Blanksma, Senior Vice President, International Sales and Partnerships, Love Nature; Patrick Hurl, managing director at Autentic, will examine whether the tastes and needs of viewers and channels have changed after COVID. The panel will focus on the state of documentaries after COVID and in the era of broadcasting, the future of distributors and how their role is changing.

Sunny Side of the Doc takes place June 20-23.
