Is June 20, 2022 a federal holiday?

Juneteenth. Freedom Day. Liberation Day. Whatever you call it, the celebration is here — but is it a federal holiday?

Juneteenth is honored annually on June 19, and it commemorates the emancipation of slaves from African Americans in 1865.

On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law declaring: “All persons held as slaves are, and henceforth shall be, free.”

However, it wasn’t until two years later on June 19, 1865, when Union Army General Gordon Granger officially declared that slaves in Texas were free under General Order No.

It’s been a big day in African American history and has been honored with parades and parties across America for decades, but is it a federal holiday? Read on to find out…

Is June 20, 2022 a federal holiday?

June 20, 2022 is a federal holiday for the month of June. The holiday falls on Sunday (June 19), so the next day the federal holiday is celebrated on Monday 20.

However, it only became one in 2021. On June 16, 2021, the House of Representatives passed legislation which designated Juneteenth as a federal holiday and officially named it the 11th National Independence Day.

Bill 415-14 was approved, only voted against by 14 Republicans, and the federal holiday was officially adopted with a celebration in the White House.

“Great nations don’t ignore the most painful moments. Great nations don’t walk away. We come to terms with the mistakes we’ve made. Remembering those moments, we begin to recover and grow stronger,” Biden said.

He continued, “I’ve only been president for several months now, but I think this would be one of the greatest honors I would have as president.”

Kamala Harris, the first black woman to serve as Vice President, added, “We’re here to witness that Joe Biden establishes Gwenteth as a national holiday. We’ve come a long way, and we still have a lot to go, but today is a day of celebration.”

Signed by Lincoln on January 1, 1863

It was already a public holiday in Texas

It may have been only a federal holiday, but Juneteenth has been a public holiday in Texas since 1980.

Federal holidays are set by the US government and all states must follow them, but individual states are also allowed to set their own public holidays.

The public holiday is still a public holiday, but it is only celebrated in a specific state and not at the national level.

Juneteenth officially became a public holiday for the state of Texas on January 1, 1980, after state representative Al Edwards introduced the bill.

Most other states followed suit as well and made Juneteenth a public holiday, but institutions like banks and schools didn’t have to legally close until it was made a federal holiday in 2021.

SEATTLE, USA, June 19, 2020: At midday, a huge crowd traveled south on 23rd Street just east of downtown for the Juneteenth rally.
