Tarantino ‘Django/Zoro’ Dead, Screenplay Hooked Antonio Banderas

Reports surfaced in 2019 that Quentin Tarantino was going to continue the world of “Django Unchained” on the big screen by adapting his cross-comic book “Django/Zorro,” which finds the freed slave (played by Jamie Foxx in the film) together with the masked ranger. Tarantino called up comedian Jerrod Carmichael to write the script, and even went to Antonio Banderas to have him re-enact Zorro’s character in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro” and 2005’s “The Legend of Zorro.”

Banderas recently confirmed to USA TODAY Tarantino approached him to star in a crossover movie. “He talked to me, I think Oscar night [in 2020] When I was nominated for the “Pain and Glory” award. We saw each other at one of those parties. He just approached me and I said, ‘In your hands? Yes man!’ Because Quentin has that nature to do this kind of movie and give it quality. Even if it’s based on those kinds of B-movies from the ’60s and ’70s, he can take that material and do something really interesting.”

“We’ve never worked together, but he’ll be great because of him, because of Jamie Foxx and because of (playing) Zorro again when he’s a little bit older,” Banderas added. “It’s going to be cool, funny, and crazy.”

Unfortunately, the project appears to have been a victim of the pandemic. Carmichael recently confirmed to GQ magazine That “Django/Zorro” no longer occurs. No specific cause was given for the project’s death, though Carmichael made it seem that he might have been too ambitious to get off the ground.

“Quentin is crazy I love him, and I’m glad I was able to pass the time,” said Carmichael. “We saw the exploit flicks on New Beverly, he read me scenes that never made it to his movies, which he wrote, in his kitchen after making fresh lemonade for me. It was really special. It’s actually an incredible and incredible script that came from Django/Zorro” “Which I’d love for Sony to figure out, but I realize that’s impossible. But I still think we wrote a $500 million movie.”

Tarantino has yet to announce a directing follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The director is still planning to retire from the film industry after his tenth film, which happens to be his next.
