Note the lively debate over why the 94th Academy Awards has earned a nomination in this category, taking a place every year since 2007. Was it a lively, lively show from the hands of Will Packer and hosts Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes? Or is it the infamous slap of presenter Chris Rock by winning lead actor Will Smith that will push them in that direction?
Either way, the 15 submitted contenders (who will produce only three nominees in the category) will have a tough time leading the way with the ’90s nostalgia that happened at Super Bowl Sunday. From producers Jesse Collins and Rock Nation, the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime show from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood is probably the best in this race. How could any Hollywood not vote for this iconic, nostalgic celebration — themed Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige — especially in a game that the Rams won?
According to social media company TikTok, the “For You, Paige” event, developed in collaboration with creators around the world and inspired by the musical theater community, has racked up over 40 million views on the platform. Although last year’s entry from the social media platform, Ratatouille: TikTok Musical, came short, there may be a path for creator Daniel Mertzloft, along with the app’s global buzz, to make headway.
When it aired on Prime Video, the American Country Music Awards continued unhindered from Las Vegas, with Dolly Parton in strength alongside co-hosts Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett. The party that has rewarded the likes of Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood has appeared in this space before, and it’s still a contender.
Anything that Norman Lear touches should be considered a competitor. With its first “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” outings, “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” hits in 2019, and “Good Times” and “All in the Family” hits in 2021, this release is within reach Another nomination.
Live from Las Vegas, the April Gala hosted by Trevor Noah saw John Baptiste receive the most nominations with 11 and take home the most awards with five. After a pandemic delay was followed by a strong showing, the Recording Academy should be able to sneak into the fray. However, Emmy nominations are usually sporadic and not always guaranteed.
The passion and adoration of country star Naomi Judd may help CMT’s “Celebration of the River of Time” make a special infiltration into the squad.
