Star Plus Unveils “Santa Evita” and “Nada” by Robert De Niro

To underscore the push for more ambitious productions in Latin America, Star Plus, Walt Disney’s year-long public entertainment and sports broadcasting service in the region, presented an early production of the “Santa Evita” banner at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment at a screening event on June 22.

Attendees at the Spain-based Forum Toledo got an exclusive preview of the pilot episode of the seven-part limited series, which is set to bow July 26 on Star Plus Latin America, Hulu in the US, and Disney’s Star in the rest. around the world. the scientist.

Santa Evita anticipates more “real life stories” shows that Star Plus develops, based on larger-than-life characters in Latin American culture and history.

“We serve many markets, and in order to connect with our audiences, we develop stories about people they know, who know their stories,” said Leonardo Aranjuebel, Vice President of Production Operations and Strategy for The Walt Disney Company. Latin America, which lists projects based on Pancho Villa, leader of the Mexican Revolution, Argentine heavyweight boxing champion Oscar “Ringo” Bonavena, and newly announced “O Rei da TV,” a Gullane production about Silvio Santos, a Brazilian entrepreneur, media mogul and host TV.

One of Toledo’s highlights, “Nada,” peeked into one excerpt, features Robert De Niro who made a special appearance in the first four episodes and guest stars in episode five.

Created by Mariano Cohn and Gaston Dubrat (“Distinguished Citizen,” “The Official Contest”) the series is about a prominent food critic based on a woman who has worked as a personal assistant – housekeeper – chef for decades. When he loses her, he recruits a young Paraguayan lady, leading to a clash of cultures and generations, and eventually to some valuable life lessons. De Niro plays a famous American writer and old friend who witnesses the life of a food critic, taking this unexpected turn.

Speaking on Conecta Fiction alongside Aranguibel, Mariana Pérez, head of general entertainment production for Walt Disney America Latin America, said: “When we thought about who could play this American friend, we immediately thought of De Niro. We searched for him and sent him the scripts. It was a great experience, and he piqued his interest and came to Argentina for a week; Perez said, it was a great experience, adding, “Once he said yes, the script changed a bit, he collaborated on the changes to expand his character a little more.”

Aranguibel added, “Robert hasn’t acted in a TV series as a character, he’s made a cameo on ’30 Rock’ but not as a character. It’s great because it opens huge doors for us with other talents, with other countries, other companies.”

Based on the bestselling book by Argentine journalist Tomas Eloy Martinez, “Santa Evita” traces the surreal fate of the body of Eva Perón, the wife of Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón, after her death in 1952. After it remains unburied for three people. Years while the memorial was being completed, Peron was overthrown by a military coup. In order to prevent Eva Peron’s body from becoming a symbol of dissent, the military regime hid her embalmed body for years. “It was taken to Germany, Italy and other places before it was finally returned to Perón when he came back to power,” Arngible said. He added that several wax copies of her body were spreading, confusing everyone even more.

Developed and produced jointly by Patricio Rabufetti’s Non Stop, “Santa Evita” is a passion project of Mariana Pérez, President of General Entertainment Production, The Walt Disney Company Latin America, who developed the series on Fox Networks Latin America prior to the Disney-Fox merger.

Stressing that the series is not autobiographical, Perez said, “The most important challenge to this story is that it talks about a global issue, a patriarchal system that can lead a military regime to imprison a woman’s body for 16 years!”

“It’s how they used her body to prove that they were in power, that they were in power. That’s what drove me to make this story.”

“We wanted to premiere this on July 26, because it’s been 70 years since Evita Perón’s death, and the opening scene of the series is her death,” added Arangoible.

The project, which took 10 years to prepare, got a boost when Ventanarosa’s Salma Hayek and Baby Times stepped up as executive producers with director Rodrigo Garcia who also serves as showrunner and executive producer for the series. Argentine director, actor, theater director and screenwriter Alejandro Massi will direct five episodes while Garcia directs the first two.

The international cast is led by Natalia Oreiro (Eva Peron), Ernesto Alterio (Morri König), Dario Grandinetti (Juan Domingo Perón), Francesc Orella (Dr. Ara) and Diego Velazquez (Mariano Vazquez).
